General appearance: A Scottish Terrier is a sturdy, thickset dog of a suitable size to go to ground, placed on short legs, alert in carriage, and suggestive of great power and activity in small compass. The head gives the impression of being long for a dog of its size. The body is covered with a close-lying, broken, roughtextured coat; with its keen, intelligent eyes and sharp, prick ears, the dog looks willing to go anywhere and do anything. In spite of its short legs, the construction is such that it is a very agile and active dog. The movement of the dog is smooth, easy, and straightforward, with free action at shoulder, stifle and hock.

Head and Skull: Without being out of proportion to the size of the dog, it should be long, the length of skull enabling it to be fairly wide and yet retain a narrow appearance. The skull is nearly flat and the cheek-bones do not protrude. There is a slight but distinct stop between skull and foreface just in front off the eye. The nose is large, and in profile the line from the nose towards the chin appears to slope backwards.

Eyes: Should be almond-shaped, dark brown, fairly wide apart and set deeply under the eyebrows.

Ears: Neat, of fine texture, pointed and erect.

Mouth: The teeth large, the upper incisors closely overlapping the lower.

Neck: Muscular, of moderate Length.

Forequarters: The head is carried on a muscular neck of moderate length, showing quality, set into a long sloping shoulder; the brisket well in front of the forelegs, which are straight and well-boned to straight pasterns. The chest fairly broad and hung between the forelegs, which must not be out at elbows nor placed under the body.

Body: The body has well-rounded ribs, which flatten to a deep chest and are carried well back. The back is proportionately short and very muscular. In general the topline of the body should he straight and level; the loin muscular and deep, thus powerfully coupling the ribs to the hindquarters.

Hindquarters: Remarkably powerful for the size of the dog. Big and wide buttocks. Thighs deep and muscular, well-hent at stifle. Hocks strong and well-bent and turned neither inwards nor outwards.

Feet: Of good size and well-padded, toes well-arched and close-knit.

Tail: Of moderate length to give a general balance to the dog, thick at the root and tapering towards the tip, set-on with an upright carriage or with a slight bend.

Coat: The dog has two coats, the undercoat short, dense, and soft: the outer coat harsh, dense, and wiry; the two making a weather-resisting covering to the dog.

Colour: Black, wheaten, or brindle of any colour.

Weight and size: The ideally-made dog in hard show condition should weigh from 19-23lb. Height, 10-11 inches.

Note: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Aspetto generale: Cane massiccio, di taglia adeguata per entrare in tana, zampe corte, e portamento vivace, dà l’impressione di grande potenza ed agilità in poco volume. La testa dà l’impressione di essere lunga per un cane della sua mole. Molto agile ed attivo malgrado gli arti corti.

Caratteristiche: Leale e fedele. Dignitoso, indipendente e riservato, ma coraggioso e molto intelligente.

Temperamento: Ardito ma mai aggressivo.

Testa e cranio: Testa lunga senza essere sproporzionata alla taglia del cane. La lunghezza del cranio gli permette di essere abbastanza largo e ciò nonostante sembrare stretto. Cranio quasi piatto , i parietali non devono essere prominenti. Il muso é forte e profondo nelle tre dimensioni. Cranio e muso della stessa lunghezza. Vi é un leggero ma ben definito stop tra cranio e muso, in linea con gli occhi. Il tartufo é largo e, di profilo, la linea tra il tartufo ed il mento appare sfuggente.

Occhi: A forma di mandorla, bruno scuro, piazzati abbastanza distanti ed inseriti profondamente sotto l’arco sopraccigliare con una profonda ed intelligente espressione.

Orecchie: Di spessore sottile, a punta, portate erette, e piazzate in cima al cranio ma non troppo ravvicinate. Sono altamente indesiderate le orecchie grandi e con la base larga.

Bocca: Denti larghi con una perfetta, regolare chiusura a forbice: gli incisivi superiori sono ben appoggiati agli inferiori, e sono impiantati perpendicolari nella mascella.

Collo: Muscoloso e di lunghezza moderata.

Anteriore: La testa é piazzata su un collo di moderata lunghezza che denota però qualità e che é inserito tra le scapole lunghe e ben oblique; lo sterno é ben proiettato in avanti rispetto alle zampe, che devono avere una buona ossatura e pastorali diritti. Il torace é abbastanza largo e disceso tra gli arti anteriori senza gomiti scollati, o collocati sotto il corpo.

Corpo: Costole ben cerchiate che si appiattiscono nel torace profondo, e ben rivolte all’indietro. Dorso proporzionatamente corto e molto muscoloso. Linea dorsale diritta ed uniforme, groppa muscolosa e profonda, la zona tra le costole ed il posteriore é molto potente.

Posteriore: Estremamente potente per la taglia del cane. Natiche larghe e grandi, cosce profonde e ginocchio ben flesso. Garretti corti, robusti, né vaccini, né cagnoli.

Piedi: Sono abbastanza grandi, cuscinetti plantari ben sviluppati, dita arcuate e riunite, i piedi anteriori sono più grandi dei posteriori.

Coda: E’ di media lunghezza, tanto da dare al cane un aspetto bilanciato, spessa alla radice, va affinandosi in punta. Portata diritta o con una leggera curva.

Movimento: Leggero e fluente, diritto sia dal davanti che dal dietro, con spinta del posteriore ed un’andatura sempre uniforme.

Mantello: Pelo aderente e doppio: sottopelo corto, denso e soffice; pelo esterno ruvido, denso e spesso; insieme formano una buona protezione per le intemperie.

Colore: Nero, grano o brizzolato in tutte le sfumature.

Taglia: Altezza al garrese cm. 25.4 - 28 (10 -11 pollici); peso kg. 8.600 - 10 ( 19 - 23 libbre ).

Difetti: Tutto ciò che si discosta dai punti sopra citati., deve essere considerato un difetto la cui rilevanza é direttamente proporzionata alla sua gravità.

N.B. I maschi devono avere due testicoli di aspetto normale completamente discesi nello scroto.
